Comfort Ratio Calculator
Enter the four measurements to compute Ted Brewer's Comfort Ratio — a rough predictor of how a boat moves in waves.
The Comfort Ratio formula
CR = Displacement ÷ (0.65 × (0.7×LWL + 0.3×LOA) × Beam^1.33), with displacement in pounds and lengths in feet. Devised by naval architect Ted Brewer, it rewards heavy, narrow hulls that move slowly and easily rather than snapping back quickly.
How to read it
- Under 20 — racing / light coastal, quick motion.
- 20–30 — coastal cruiser.
- 30–40 — moderate bluewater.
- Over 40 — heavy offshore, easy motion.
